Ritter Park and its westward extension, Memorial Park, are among the defining features of Huntington's Southside. Their landscapes, walking paths, historic features, recreation areas, and natural beauty contribute greatly to the quality of life of the neighborhood and the wider Huntington community.
The Southside Alliance has long supported efforts that recognize the importance of these parks and encourage thoughtful preservation, maintenance, and long-term stewardship.
The park has changed. Its importance has not.
Ritter Park has served generations of Huntington residents and visitors. Its historic landscape, stonework, bridges, paths, mature trees, and recreational spaces have helped make it one of the city's most recognizable public places.
Memorial Park extends that legacy westward and carries its own historical and community significance.
The Alliance believes that improvements to these spaces should respect the features and character that have made them meaningful to generations of residents.

The Southside Alliance's Parks Committee provides a neighborhood voice for the preservation and enhancement of Ritter and Memorial Parks. The committee works collaboratively with the Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District and other community partners.

Advocating for long-term maintenance and improvement planning that considers the parks' historic character alongside modern recreational and community needs.
Historic District Preservation
Supporting protection of the existing Ritter Park Historic District and consideration of appropriate opportunities to strengthen historic recognition and preservation.

Recognizing that smaller improvements, from refreshed streetscape elements to well-maintained public features, can contribute meaningfully to the overall character of the parks.

Park stewardship is a shared effort.
The Southside Alliance does not independently manage or direct operations within Ritter or Memorial Parks.
Our role is to advocate for neighborhood interests, support preservation-minded efforts, encourage thoughtful planning, and collaborate with the Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District and other partners when appropriate.
We appreciate the professionals, public agencies, volunteers, organizations, donors, residents, and community partners whose work contributes to the care and continued enjoyment of these parks.
